Call For Papers, Beyond Borderlands: A Critical Journal of the Weird, Paranormal, and Occult
Deadline: February 1^st , 2014
Beyond Borderlands is an open, online, peer reviewed
journal and a forum
for the interdisciplinary, artistic, and critical
exploration of topics
relating to esotericism, paranormality, and the
culturally weird. Within
our pages we hope to foster a conversation between
academic approaches,
contemporary practitioners, and artists and writers
exploring these
themes. We seek to create a shared space for these
divergent approaches,
without compromising the methodological integrity or free
creativity
appropriate to each.
Since the early work of David Bloor, Harry Collins, and
others involved
with the strong programme in the sociology of scientific
knowledge,
scholars have increasingly come to see the importance of
the principle
of symmetry in their explanations of knowledge production
and exchange.
Anthropologists, such as David J. Hess and Stefan
Helmreich, and
historians, such as Heather Wolffram and Andreas Sommer,
have been able
to employ this principle to show how even in the modern
period the
weird, paranormal, and occult have continued to play a
major role in
science and society. The recognition that scientific
knowledge is
coproduced inspired by Bernard Lightman, Steven Epstein,
and Sheila
Jasanoff challenges scholars to consider the ways in
which their own
work interacts with society. This view encourages us as
scholars to
engage with the kind of multifaceted, multi-skilled
community that
Beyond Borderlands seeks to create.
Those interested may submit articles of approximately
4000 to 8000 words
formatted according to the /Chicago Manual of Style/,
16^th edition with
citations as footnotes, as well as an abstract of
approximately 250 words.
We also seek to introduce readers to scholarship
pertaining to weird,
paranormal, and occult topics, while providing a guide
for its
interpretation through critical analysis and
contextualization. To
facilitate this we are also looking for knowledgeable
commentators to
submit reviews between 1000 and 2500 words of academic
works in these
areas of interest.
The submission deadline for our January issue in
September 1^st , and
for our July issue is February 1^st .
Please send all submissions to submissions@beyondborderlands.com.
