Assistant Professor of the History of Recent Life Sciences

The Department of History of Science at the UW-Madison invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the history of recent life sciences, extending back to the mid-twentieth century.  The position begins in August 2013..

Applicants should already hold a doctorate in History of Science, Science and Technology Studies, History, or related disciplines, or they must complete the doctorate by the time of the appointment. The successful candidate will help to advance research and teaching in the historical, political, cultural, and ethical dimensions of recent life science. The successful candidate will contribute to strengthening the humanities at the UW by drawing on historical perspectives and promoting interdisciplinary synergy within the humanities in ways that engage critically with the recent life sciences. This person should be prepared to engage in the intellectual life of a faculty with diverse interests, as well as embrace departmental commitments to undergraduate and graduate education and engage in significant ongoing research.  The successful candidate is also expected to perform departmental, university and community services as appropriate.

Interested candidates should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, complete graduate transcripts, and a writing sample of approximately 40-50 pages (the equivalent of a journal article, dissertation or book chapter), along with three signed letters of recommendation to Eileen Ward, History of Recent Life Science Search Committee, 210 Bradley Memorial, 1225 Linden Dr., Madison, WI 53706-1528. Electronic submission of materials in pdf format will also be accepted, and should be directed to: search@histsci.wisc.edu.  All inquiries can be directed to the same email address.  When submitting materials via email, please be sure to include the applicant’s full name in the subject line.  The letter of application should include information about the applicant’s anticipated course offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels, along with current and future research.  If the writing sample forms part of a larger book manuscript or dissertation, please include a statement of how the writing sample fits in with the larger project. For full consideration, complete applications must be received by December 5, 2012.
