The Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry: The Partington Prize 2014

The Partington Prize 2014 The Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry has established the Partington Prize in memory of Professor James Riddick Partington, the Society’s first Chairman. It is awarded every three years for an original and unpublished essay on any aspect of the history of alchemy or chemistry. The prize consists of five hundred pounds (£500). The competition is open to anyone with a scholarly interest in the history of alchemy or chemistry who, by the closing date of 31 December 2013, has not reached 35 years of age, or if older has been awarded a doctoral thesis in the history of science within the previous three years. Scholars from any country may enter the competition, but entries must be submitted in English and must not have been previously submitted to another journal. The prize-winning essay will be published in the Society’s journal,  Ambix. Entries should be submitted electronically as e-mail attachments. We prefer files to be Microsoft Word docum

Research expertise within the department stretches from antiquity to contemporary history, and we invite applications for any suitable topic. Applicants will normally have completed, or be about to complete, a Masters in history or a related discipline, with an achieved or predicted grade of Distinction; and have gained a First-class BA honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. Call for Submissions from Oxford University Press Editor in Chief: Ibrahim Kalin Senior Editors: Salim Ayduz, Caner Dagli The [Oxford] Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Science and Technology in Islam, one in a series of four reference works on Islamic studies, will be published in 2013 as a part of Oxford's award-winning reference program, which includes The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World and Oxford Islamic Studies Online. The two-volume encyclopedia will include over 300 entries with maps, figures, etc. The Encyclopedia is currently seeking submissions for entries ranging from 750 to 4,000 words on the philosophical, scientific and technological dimensions of Islam and the Muslim world. Individual entries are planned in the following areas: .          Biographies of major figures of philosophy, science, and technology from the classical through the modern period such as Ibn Sina, Ibn Tufayl, Jabir ibn Hayyan, al-Majriti, etc. .
