Call for Manuscripts: "Environment, Health, and Well-being" (Book Series at Michigan State University Press)

This series tackles the relationship between health and the environment, paying particular attention to changes occurring over time and across place. It seeks to illuminate the causes and consequences of human, more-than-human, and environmental ill-health, while also attending to possibilities for well-being, flourishing, and repair. Encouraging an expanded notion of health, Environment, Health, and Well-being presents scholarship that considers human well-being as directly correlated with health systems; extends the notion of health and well-being beyond the purely human frame; and interrogates planetary health through specific landscapes, ecologies, and human and more-than-human activities. Recognizing the ecological, political, social, and viral turbulence of our current times, the monographs and edited collections in this series look to interdisciplinary practice within the field of the environmental humanities as a way of understanding the present, reflecting upon the past, and r

CfP: Compassion and care: emotions and experience in the care of children through history

The John Rylands Research Institute and Library, Deansgate, Manchester, UK.  23-24 March 2023 Deadline: submissions should be emailed to Kate Gibson (University of Manchester) and Claudia Soares (Newcastle University) at compassionandcare2023@gmail.com by 30 October 2022. The care system in the UK is under increasing pressure: systematic budget cuts, prolonged austerity, and sustained issues with staff recruitment, retention and burnout have all contributed to the crumbling of the nation’s care agencies. Independent care reviews across the UK have highlighted the need to reform and ‘reset’ the system of children’s social care, so that lifelong loving, supportive and nurturing relationships are placed at its heart. These reviews have occurred in the midst of growing demand for accountability and transparency in care processes and defence of the rights of Care Experienced people to access their records and know their history. Moreover, across the globe, carers and care work – usually de

CfP: Automation, Control, and Incompetence – Socio-Technical Ecologies of Responsible Filtering in the 20th and 21st Century

How do practices of "filtering"—technical, racial, cultural, political, environmental, and otherwise—produce the ecologies of modern life? How might a theory of filtering encompassing technological and cultural operations better explain the forms of control, responsibility, and incompetence ordering modern life? We invite papers addressing these questions from fields including media studies, cultural studies, histories of science and technology, human-computer interaction, digital humanities and informatics. We understand filtering as a fundamental technique that enables human and non-human actors to shape and create environments through differentiation. The environments emerging from processes of filtering are interconnected and encompass several dimensions. They are always material, but also invoke the symbolic and social (Cubasch et al 2021; Razghandi and Yaghmaei 2020). We consider these filtered environments as powerscapes that are shaped by constellations of interests,
