Call for Papers: Complaining about Medicine, c.1700-2000

Call for Papers: Complaining about Medicine, c.1700-2000 History of Medicine Unit, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom (Dr Jonathan Reinarz, Director) 2-3 November 2012 Keynote Speakers: Professor Andrew Scull (University of California, San Diego), Professor John Clarke (Open University), Dr Alex Mold (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) In recent years, studies into experiences of health care have led historians to engage with the issue of the medical complaint. As expressions of dissatisfaction, disquiet and failings in service provision, the complaint is both a vital antidote to progressive histories of health care and, in generating contemporary investigation and debate, has also left a fertile seam for historical research. Often it is only when things go wrong that we begin to understand the complexity at work in past events. This two-day international conference will explore what has happened historically when medicine generated complaints. Amidst th

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries: Process Safety Pioneers

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries: Process Safety Pioneers Submission Deadline: December 31, 2012 Process safety has come a long way since the beginning of chemical industrial activities. Before the 1960s, hazards and risks – and accidents – were perceived to go hand-in-hand with industrial progress.  From the 1960s onwards, an evolution in the technology for – and in the attitude to – safely operating process plants has taken place. Sometimes it was more like a revolution, but far more often the evolution progressed step-by-step. All around the world, a number of “pioneers” gave direction to these process safety advancements, often working in the silence of their offices or laboratories. However, these pioneers have clearly saved large numbers of men and women from injury and death. To honour these process safety pioneers, a Special Issue of the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries is being planned.

Much of the work of our multi-year seminar focuses on creating an internally cohesive project that incorporates our diverse methodological and regional perspectives but shares a set of common themes and questions conc

Reminder: anatomical collections conference, registration deadline 1 Feb

Cultures of Anatomical Collections International conference, Leiden University, 15 > ->  17 February 2012 The conference 'Cultures of Anatomical Collections'  will explore anatomical preparations and collections (preparations of human material as well as wax and other models) as important parts of cultural heritage. This means that we treat them in a similar way as we would examine other historical artifacts stored in today's museum. Although the history of anatomy and anatomical illustrations has been a popular topic in the history of medicine during the last decade, the history of its material remains has been somewhat neglected. And yet, in particular when taking into account recent historiographies of materiality and medical practices, it offers challenging interdisciplinary questions on the history of anatomy as a whole. The conference addresses questions such as: How do the technical details of anatomical preparations tell us about the ideas of their mak

CFP: Material culture in closed spaces

Material culture in closed spaces       Interest for closed spaces played an important part in the critical renewal of the humanities from the 1960s on, as demonstrated in particular the work of Erving Goffman and Michel Foucault. For the past ten years, the spatial turn has provided new impetus for a greater consideration of space as a place of socialisation. These approaches, devoted to the empirical study of institutions such as the mental hospital and prison, have put the actors and social dynamics at the center of their interest. In keeping with this line of research, we propose to shift the gaze to the material cultures of these spaces. Be it the prison, the convent, the boarding school, the nursing home, the (psychiatric) hospital or the camp, the material culture of these institutions has gained little consideration till now. Objects, however, configure the experience of closed spaces as well for those who can leave them as for those who are locked up. They allow for a deta
