CfP: Histories of Expertise

Following the symposium on the Histories of Expertise in September 2024 at the University of Turku in Finland, we are delighted to announce the call for contributions for an edited volume. This collection is dedicated to analysing the making of experts, expertise, and expert knowledge in human societies from historical perspectives. We invite contributions from historians of science, knowledge and technology, intellectual historians, and related disciplinary fields that consider the cultural, material and social processes that in specific historical contexts contributed to the making, contestation, application, reception, and mobilities of expertise. The main purpose of our volume is to consider expertise as an analytical tool to examine different types of individuals, ideas and initiatives in different social and cultural contexts. Topical Collection in the European Journal for Philosophy of Science Guest Editors: Enno Fischer (Institute of Philosophy, TU Dresden) & Alejandro Fábregas-Tejeda (Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science, KU Leuven) Open for submissions: 1 November 2024 – 30 April 2025 Originally going back to Larry Laudan’s (1977) distinction between the ‘context of acceptance’ and the ‘context of pursuit,’ the concept of pursuitworthiness has garnered considerable attention in the philosophy of science in recent years. Galilaeana: Studies in Renaissance and Early Modern Science is an international scientific journal which publishes blind peer-reviewed research articles in the history of Renaissance and early modern science. Galilaeana is published biannually as an online, open-access peer-reviewed journal. Galilaeana encourages submissions of proposals for themed issues led by a guest editor. Themed issues should comprise of 4-6 papers and will be published in the ‘Focus’ section of Galilaeana. Any theme that falls under the broad field of Renaissance and early modern science, including the history of medicine and the history of technology, is acceptable. Applications Open - Visiting Fellowships at The Center for Philosophy of Science - University of Pittsburgh

The Center for Philosophy of Science invites applications for visiting fellowships for the fall and/or spring term of the 2025-2026 academic year. These fellowships allow philosophers of science to work on their nominated research projects in a supportive academic environment. Ten fellowships are offered each year. Eligibility:Applicants must hold a doctoral degree, preferably in philosophy or history and philosophy of science, or have an established position in the philosophy of science community. We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups. Support:Research must be funded by the applicant's university, a foundation, or a governmental agency. A stipend of $2,500 per month will be provided to help cover relocation costs.
