Edward Worth Library Research Fellowships 2016

Fellowships at the Edward Worth Library, Dublin The Edward Worth Library, Dublin, is offering a one month research fellowship, to be held in 2016, to encourage research relevant to its collections. The Worth Library is a collection of 4,400 books, left to Dr Steevens’ Hospital by Edward Worth (1676-1733), an early eighteenth-century Dublin physician. The collection is particularly strong in three areas: early modern medicine, early modern history of science and, given that Worth was a connoisseur book collector interested in fine bindings and rare printing, the History of the Book. Research does not, however, have to be restricted to these three key areas. Further information about the collection and our catalogues may be found on our website: http://www.edwardworthlibrary. ie/Home-Page The closing date is Monday 4 April 2016. For further details and application procedures please contact: Dr Elizabethanne Boran, Librarian, The Edward Worth Library, Dr St

Submission Deadline: February 08, 2016 Technology, Innovation, and Sustainability: Historical and Contemporary Narratives Innovation and sustainability have become key words of our everyday life, extending from political and economic discourse to teaching curricula and from the lay public to academia. However, the use of these terms is often abstract and simplistic, ignoring the density of their interrelationships in different geographic, historical and civilizational contexts, and the boomerang character of today’s world. The 43 rd ICOHTEC meeting aims at addressing this complex relationship by encouraging papers that contribute to a deeper understanding of the multilayer cultural and material built meaning of innovatio

They transgress borders, move across time and space and affect different forms of life – both literally and metaphorically. Each epidemic disease poses specific challenges to societies such as Zika today. Hence, epidemic diseases and threats are perfectly suited for being analyzed in a global history perspective.[1] The scholarship on the history of epidemics is rich. Whereas many studies come out of the history of medicine and the social and political sciences, the proposed panel session aims at examining epidemic diseases (such as typhoid, c

Call for applications: SIS research grants on historic scientific instruments

Just a brief reminder that the deadline for the next round of research grants from the Scientific Instrument Society (SIS) is Tuesday 1st March 2016.   The SIS awards small grants, of up to £500 each, for research on the history of scientific instruments. Applicants do not need to have any institutional affiliation and applications that are for less than the full amount are just as welcome - a properly costed proposal with a clear relevance to the Society's interests in historic scientific instruments, a realistic timetable and a tangible result are the most important factors that the committee will be considering.   Please note that the grant awarded will be paid against actual expenditure and funds cannot be paid in advance.  The grant is intended to cover items such as travel, accommodation (excluding meals) and photocopying costs.   Please note that we cannot fund conference travel or contribute to the cost of outreach projects such as events and exhibitions.   F

CFP Matter and Perception (Early Science and Medicine)

Call for Papers: “Matter and Perception” Special Issue of Early Science and Medicine     Early Science and Medicine is seeking contributions for a special issue on “Matter and Perception”   Guest editors: Michael Deckard and Doina-Cristina Rusu Deadline: 1st of August 2016   The origins of thinking about matter in early modern Europe did not begin with Francis Bacon, René Descartes, or Anne Conway, but these thinkers formulated systems of matter that replaced Aristotelian form. The characteristics of matter began to be measured, studied, observed, anatomized, or imbued with life, essentially replacing form as an explanatory principle. This development in the history of philosophy, science and culture has been told in different ways, depending on from what perspective the story is based. One way of telling it is to look at the English experimental background starting with Bacon and continuing through Boyle, Newton, and the Royal Society. Another story could be told th

Call for Papers: Interdisciplinary Workshop on Water, Technology and the Nation-State

The University of Manchester, School of Environment, Education and Development, Geography. 28 October 2016 Water is a quintessential component for life and for the development of societies. Water is also an irreplaceable and transient resource, which crosses political boundaries in the form of rivers, lakes and groundwater aquifers. Due to its unique nature, governments tend to perceive and portray water as a national asset constituting an integral part of “the homeland”. Just like space, territory and society can be socially and politically constructed by a national elite to assert its power (Swyngedouw, 2007). This is also the case for the management of water resources. As a result, the construction of a large hydraulic infrastructure, such as for instance a major dam or a canal, can be surrounded by a rhetorical discourse that emphasises its contribution to a prosperous future and to the realisation of national goals while nurturing national development and pr

Huygens ING and Leiden University Libraries present an online edition-in-progress of the letters of Carolus Clusius

Huygens ING and the Scaliger Institute (Leiden University Libraries) present an ‘edition-in-progress’ of the correspondence of Carolus Clusius, using the collaborative editing tool eLaborate. Carolus Clusius (1526-1609) was one of the central figures of the so-called botanical renaissance of the sixteenth century. His vast correspondence has already gained considerable attention from biologists and historians, but a complete edition was never realized.   Huygens ING and the Scaliger Institute made a big step towards a complete digital edition of the Clusius correspondence by assembling and digitizing all existing transcriptions of the letters in eLaborate (an online transcription tool developed by Huygens ING). The work now includes metadata belonging to all known 1600 letters, scans of 1170 letters and transcriptions at different stages of completion of almost 1000 letters. Most of these are written by Clusius and a range of persons from all social layers with an i

CFP: "Urban Peripheries?" Emerging Cities in Europe's South and East, 1850-1945 - Barcelona 09/16

"Science and the city" has become a trending topic in recent historiography, both in history of science, technology and medicine (STM) as well as in Urban Studies. So far there has been a strong focus on the metropolis and their multifaceted scientific culture. Yet what about "peripheral cities" in Eastern and Southern Europe? Are they only smaller copies of London, Paris and Berlin? What is to be gained from studying the scientific culture of "non-metropolitan" cities? So far these cities have been described as being on the receiving end.-Knowledge in STM, blue prints for scientific institutions, urban models and other practices were created and tested in the metropolis and then passed on. This postulates a transfer from the center to the periphery and hence a clear epistemological hierarchy. The double workshop, organised in Germany by the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe (Germany) and in Spain by the Institució Milà

Medical Humanities Dissertations

Colleagues: You can view the latest batch of recent doctoral dissertations harvested from the issues 76-04 A and B of Dissertation Abstracts pertaining to aspects of the broad scope of the history of medicine and health care at the following URL:  http://www.hsls.pitt.edu/ histmed/dissertations ProQuest has altered how they put out their individual issues.  No longer do they correlate to one month, so the dating is more random.  Thus titles will range from 2015-yes they have some 2015 dates-back into the1930’s. Because ProQuest has begun downloading a large number of earlier dissertations from many institutions a decision has been made to only include titles going back to 2010 in this database.  Anyone who wants the complete list of titles on this topic should email me directly at erlen@pitt.edu and I will email you the full list. Please share this information with your colleagues and students. As always your comments and corrections are always welcome.
