CfP: Global Histories of Cold War Cartography

Cartographic technologies and sciences underwent revolutionary transformations during the global Cold War (1945-1989) as military officers, scientists, governments, private corporations, universities, and think tanks sought to define and adapt to global political and historical contexts. New technologies, including radar navigation, satellite imagery, the World Geodetic System, and GPS, met the demands of new kinds of global warfare, including counter-insurgency, but also were redeployed to serve civilian and developmental ends of the Cold War. In regions like Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, where the Cold War was anything but ‘cold’, cartographic technologies played a crucial role in defining battlefields as military and paramilitary forces sought to control and conquer territory and to eradicate armed insurgents, while those same insurgents used their knowledge of local urban and rural geographies to remain hidden from the eyes of the state. Development poles in “unexploite...

FEM ciència? – 5a temporada

CfA: Authority and Authoritarianism - ECSE 2025 Conference in Milan (25-26 September)

Are we living in an age of new Authoritarianism? The rise of moderate and extreme forms of authoritarianism has become an increasingly pressing issue in both public discussion and academic debate. If the more traditional definition of this term refers to State or élite domination, today there are manifestations of this phenomenon expanding in the entire social life, through various means, among which public discourse, social media, private companies’ influence over politics. The effects of this phenomenon are multifarious: people who arbitrarily claim authority or act as one, leading to the degradation of democratic participation, the weakening of check-and-balances, the new fascinating image of strength and strong leaders, a returning wave of moral authoritarianism and moralism. In 1951, Hannah Arendt questioned the origins of totalitarianism in her well-known text on the political theory of XX Century regimes; today, a similar operation is needed to understand what the historical and...

CfP: Philosophy of Risk: Beliefs, Values and Decisions (Topical Collection, Synthese)

Link to the official CfP:  https://link.springer. com/collections/efeahhigfb Guest editors: Malvina Ongaro ( Politecnico di Milano ) Giacomo Zanotti ( Politecnico di Milano ) Pavel Janda ( Politecnico di Milano ) Daniele Chiffi ( Politecnico di Milano ) Description : In a world characterized by the challenges of climate change, new technologies, globalisation, and growing instabilities, risk is increasingly relevant both in our daily life and in academic research. And yet, it still largely lacks unitary frameworks: as a concept, risk encompasses different meanings and interpretations across disciplines and, at times, even within the same field. This Topical Collection explores the definitional, epistemic, and practical complexities of risk and of its different sources. It examines from a philosophical perspective the multifaceted theoretical dimensions of risk, in dialogue with their practical implications in areas such as science, technology, and decision-making.   The g...
