CfP: 'Epidemics and their determinants: Past and present' / Barcelona

COVID-19 has shown that epidemics are not solely relics of the past, nor are they exclusive to lowincome countries. Consequently, there has been a surge of academic interest in studying contemporary and historical epidemics. Despite efforts to reference and employ historical epidemic management measures such as cordons sanitaires or quarantines, historical epidemics have rarely been used as a testing ground to advance our understanding of present and future outbreaks or as a foundation for future preparedness.  This workshop aims to create a platform for interdisciplinary debate bridging the gap between past and present epidemics. It aims to bring together historians, demographers, epidemiologists, geographers, and related disciplines that deal with the study of infectious diseases. The workshop will focus on epidemics and their dynamics, both past and present. Possible topics to be addressed are: Socioeconomic and environmental determinants in the spread of epidemics.  Role of non-pha

Novedad bibliográfica de libre acceso: A Mist Connection An Environmental History of the Laki Eruption of 1783 and Its Legacy

Author information: Katrin Kleemann, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, München. In the summer of 1783, an unusual dry fog descended upon large parts of the northern hemisphere. The fog brought with it bloodred sunsets, a foul sulfuric odor, and a host of other peculiar weather events. Inspired by the Enlightenment, many naturalists attempted to find reasonable explanations for these occurrences. Between 8 June 1783 and 7 February 1784, a 27-kilometer-long fissure volcano erupted in the Icelandic highlands. It produced the largest volume of lava released by any volcanic eruption on planet Earth in the last millennium. In Iceland, the eruption led to the death of one-fifth of the population. The jetstream carried its volcanic gases further afield to Europe and beyond, where they settled as a fog, the origin of which puzzled naturalists and laypersons. "A Mist Connection" is an environmental history that documents the Laki eruption and its consequences for Iceland and the wider wo

This session invites anthropological and historical case studies examining how people of the past have understood, lived in, and coped with changing environments, both global and local. We are children of the Quaternary period (2.6 mya - present), but we are increasingly apprehensive about our future prospects in the so-called "Anthropocene" epoch. Our species (Homo sapiens) emerged in the Pleistocene and survived scores of major climatic fluctuations, including multiple ice ages and interglacial epochs. Civilization developed in the Holocene, the most recent interglacial epoch. Was human survival and flourishing due to wisdom and knowledge, technology, social organization, luck, or to a number of such interacting factors? On the other hand, could such human attributes also generate additional problems? Turning to the historical record, ancient, medieval, early modern, and enlightenment-era natural philosophers and scientists of the 19th and 20th centuries speculated on the c

CfP: Fugitive Histories and Migrant Knowledge in Latin America and the Caribbean (May 20-21, 2024)

Workshop at the University of California, Irvine | Conveners: Kevan Antonio Aguilar (University of California, Irvine), Amy Kerner (University of California, Berkeley & GHI Washington | Pacific Office), Fabio Santos (University of California, Berkeley & GHI Washington | Pacific Office), and Chelsea Schields (University of California, Irvine) In recent years, scholars of migration and exile have challenged standard integration and assimilation paradigms that (mis)represent migration as a one-way street. Postcolonial and decolonial approaches have opened fruitful conceptual and theoretical notions such as entangled (im)mobilities, migrant knowledge, connected histories and sociologies, and multidirectional memories, which together spotlight varied movements and influences beyond those of hegemonic groups. This workshop aims to bring together empirically rich contributions informed by these new approaches. Regionally focused on Latin America and the Caribbean, the workshop is incl

CfP: RCL nº. 59 | Media-Bodies: matter and imaginary

Revista de Comunicação e Linguagens/ Journal of Communication and Languages. (ICNOVA / NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities) Url: https://rcl.fcsh.unl.pt/index.php/rcl/announcement/view/6 Submissions deadline: July 31, 2023 changed to September 22, 2023 (full articles) Expected publication date: December 2023 Editors: Aida Castro (ICNOVA / I2ADS) Maria Mire (CICANT / AR.CO) Media-bodies are frontier bodies that operate in the spaces-between. They are bodies that define and materialise themselves, acquire and install bodies in the crossings and, for this very reason, are open to the practices of the imaginary. Media-bodies show their specific experiences, politics and languages: they are their own medium appearance and their own essay and we can say that this emerges in the embodiment of the materialities they convoke, evoke or even in those that circulate and imagine in the crossings. Does (in) a media-body vibrate the latency of its temporality? The cyborg, as Donna Haraway

The collection is richly illustrated with artwork, photography, collage and mixed media. The book is a heterodox compendium of ‘beasts of waste’, playfully re-imagining the medieval treatise on various kinds o
