The first available drug of this group, penicillin, its production in different national settings, the establishment of a successful clinical trials regime, the remarkable results in the treatment of infections and its cultural representation shaped public and medical knowledge. As agents of a medical revolution which shifted borders between health and disease and created new spaces for therapy, antibiotics have become one of the most popular scientific success stories of the twentieth century. The (After)Life of Traditional Knowledge: The Cultural Politics and Historical Epistemology of East Asian Medicine  (20-21 August 2010, University of Westminster) Registration is now open for the workshop “The (After)Life of Traditional Knowledge: The Cultural Politics and Historical Epistemology of East Asian Medicine,” to be held on 20-21 August 2010 at the EASTmedicine (East Asian Sciences and Traditions in Medicine) Research Centre at the School of Life Sciences, University of Westminster, London. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation, the workshop brings together 23 scholars who are currently working at the cutting edge of history and anthropology of medicine in East Asia. The Institute of European History (IEG) awards 2 research fellowships for international postdocs for a research stay in Mainz from January 2011. The proposed projects should require a research stay in Mainz for at least 6 months. Funding is € 1.600/month. The fellowships are tailored to young researchers who want to embark upon a new research project after the completion of their PhD. At the IEG they can prepare the ground for their future academic career as independant senior researchers. The close and constant dialogue with historians and theologians of the IEG's research units may yield new insights and per-spectives on individual projects (see http://www.ieg-mainz.de/forschungsbereiche ). Candidates take up their postdoctorial fellowship within the three years following the comple-tion of their PhD (work experience outside academia NOT included).
