CALL FOR PAPERS After Longitude - Modern navigation in context National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London Thursday-Friday 22-23 March 2012 Following a successful meeting in 2010, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Institute of Navigation are planning a second symposium to bring together current research in the history of navigation. In particular it will aim to investigate the connections between navigational advances and the development of exploration, surveying, commerce and empire from the 19th century to today. Possible themes might include, but would not be restricted to: - the development of navigational instruments, maps and charts and related techniques - the impact of changing technologies on practices and practitioners - the links between marine, land, air and space navigation - research that places these developmen

A Review of the Disabled Body in Contemporary Art Representations of disabled bodies are not uncommon in Western art. Figures using crutches appear in the paintings of Masaccio and Pieter Bruegel the Elder; court dwarfs feature in a stunning series of portraits by Diego Velázquez; Jusepe de Ribera produced a memorable image of a boy with a clubfoot. But rarely are such images analyzed within the context of disability. In _The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art_, Ann Millett-Gallant aims to explore what can be learned about art "from the perspective of disability" and disability "through contemporary art" (pp. 5-6). Beth Linker, War’s Waste: Rehabilitation in World War I America (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2011)

With US soldiers stationed around the world and engaged in multiple conflicts, Americans will be forced for the foreseeable future to come to terms with those permanently disabled in battle. At the moment, we accept rehabilitation as the proper social and cultural response to the wounded, swiftly returning injured combatants to their civilian lives. But this was not always the case, as Beth Linker reveals in her provocative new book, War’s Waste. Linker explains how, before entering World War I, the United States sought a way to avoid the enormous cost of providing injured soldiers with pensions, which it had done since the Revolutionary War. Emboldened by their faith in the new social and medical sciences, reformers pushed rehabilitation as a means to “rebuild” disabled soldiers, relieving the nation of a monetary burden and easing the decision to enter the Great War. Linker’s narrative moves from the professional development of orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists to the cur

Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies; Disability & the Victorians: Confronting Legacies; 30th July-1st August 2012; Leeds Trinity University College Second Call for Papers The nineteenth century was the period during which disability was conceptualised, categorised, and defined. The industrial revolution, advances in medicine, the emergence of philanthropy and the growth of asylums all played their part in creating what today’s society describes as the medical model of disability. Disability can be traced through many forms: in material culture and literary genres; scientific, medical and official inquiries; art; architecture; the history of disabled charities; disabled people’s experiences; the legacy inherited by disabled people today of the taxonomies and categories of disability – the ‘handicapped’; the ‘deaf and dumb’; the ‘feeble minded’; the blind; the ‘imbecile’ the ‘idiot’ and the ‘cretin’ -- the legacy of the relationship between the body, the visual, the scientific

Exotic drugs and English medicine: England’s drug trade, c.1550-c.1800

NEP: New Economics Papers Business, Economic and Financial History 1. Exotic drugs and English medicine: England’s drug trade, c.1550-c.1800 Date: 2010-07 By: Wallis, Patrick URL: http://d.repec.org/n?u=RePEc:ehl:wpaper:28577&r=his What effect did the dramatic expansion in long distance trade in the early modern period have on healthcare in England? This paper presents new evidence on the scale, origins and content of English imports of medical drugs between 1567 and 1774. It shows that the volume of medical drugs imported exploded in the seventeenth century, and continued growing more gradually over the eighteenth century. The variety of drugs imported changed more slowly. Much was re-exported, but estimates of dosages suggest that some common drugs (e.g.: senna, Jesuits’ bark) were available to the majority of the population in the eighteenth century. English demand for foreign drugs provides further evidence for a radical expansion in medical consumption in the seventeen
