Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, located in Berlin, offers one Postdoctoral Fellowship for a scholar in legal history or history of technology. The position lasts for 10 months, starting October 15, 2012 (with the possibility of starting earlier), and may be renewed. Outstanding junior scholars are invited to apply. This fellowship is awarded in conjunction with the research project, “The Writing of Deaf-Muteness and the Construction of Norms,” which “traces the writing and illustration of deaf-muteness from the early 17th century to the late 19th century in Europe and the United States.” The fellowship is endowed with a monthly stipend between €1,900 and €2,300. Call for Abstracts Second Annual Western Michigan University Medical Humanities Conference September 27-28, 2012; Kalamazoo, Michigan Overview: Proponents of medical humanities contend that the humanistic dimensions of medicine and health are a critical component of those disciplines; not only do these dimensions help us to understand the very nature of medicine and health, their apprehension allows caregivers to relate to their patients, to treat those patients with respect and dignity, and to provide more holistic and empathetic care. The Western Michigan University Medical Humanities Conference aims to explore a range of themes within the medical humanities, though a primary focus will be on how medical professionals are influenced by the humanities in their daily practices. Research opportunity in 19th and early 20th century British children's hospitals and child health PhD Bursaries available from Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Kingston University Deadline: 15 June 2012 Kingston University has announced it is making 14 fees-only PhD bursaries available across arrange of subject areas within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, including History. Over the last ten years, the History Department at Kingston has been constructing a series of databases created from admission registers to four children's hospitals in the 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the objectives of building the databases was to encourage academic work on these sources by developing a series of questions such sources could be used to investigate.   The databases provide information on nearly 120,000 individual patients including age, sex, admission details, original diagnosis, length of stay in hospital and outcome of stay.
