The Author-Translator in the European Literary Tradition

The Author-Translator in the European Literary Tradition Swansea University, 28 June - 1 July 2010 Keynote speakers: Susan Bassnett, David Constantine, Lawrence Venuti This major international conference seeks to reassess the importance of translation for European writers – both well-known and less familiar – from antiquity to the present day. It will explore why authors translate, what they translate and how they translate, as well as the links between an author’s translation work and his or her own writing. There will be almost eighty panels, on topics ranging from ‘Theories of Self-Translation’ and ‘Translation and Creativity’ to ‘Romantic Pseudo-Translation’ and ‘Translating Children’s Literature’. The conference will thus map out the phenomenon of the author-translator in Europe on a large scale for the first time. For full programme and registration, please see http://www.author-translator.net Conference Organizers: Hilary Brown & Duncan Large Department

Hitler's Scandinavian Legacy The consequences of the German invasion for the Scandinavian countries, then and now

The four Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland experienced the effects of the German invasion in April 1940 in very different ways. Today, we believe that it will be instructive to review the immediate and long-term influences on each country’s self-image and national identity as viewed today. This is the main purpose of the conference. The conference has been structured to enable historians from each country and Nordic scholars to review the last 70 years and to share issues of interpretation and commemoration with each other and their European counterparts. Collaboration, resistance, concessions, and co-belligerency were only some of the short term consequences. Each Scandinavian country’s historiography of the period has undergone enormous changes in the 70 years since the invasion to an extent which is little appreciated and understood outside the countries involved. The organisers intend to publish the papers from the conference in or

SHOT Panel: Technology in France

I realize this is a last-minute item, but I was hoping to submit my paper proposal to SHOT not as an individual paper (virtually guaranteed to be rejected), but as part of a panel. That being the case, is anyone putting together a session proposal that deals with any aspect of French technology? Technical drawing? Elites? My paper deals with the teaching of technical drawing in France 1800 to 1848 (about), its use along with writing and arithmetic to award scholarships to a panoply of technical schools, and ability in technical drawing as a gateway to the "elite" (merit-based) positions in the French bureaucracy during the same time period. The Suppression of the Jesuits

I am eager to expand my bench of potential contributors to an edited volume on the eighteenth-century suppression of the Jesuits. My chapter on the suppression in Thomas Worcester’s Cambridge Companion to the Jesuits (Cambridge, 2008) began with a lament: that a satisfactory, modern, English-language account of this most intriguing of historical events is yet to be written. The proposed volume will hopefully bring us closer to this elusive goal. Obvious subjects include but are not limited to: — accounts of the various local suppressions: in France, Spain, Portugal, their satellite territories and overseas possessions. — the papal and curial politics that accompanied the process of suppression — the role of ambassadors in bringing the suppression to fruition — the response of Jesuits to the suppression: perhaps most interestingly, the strategies of survival employed by those who suddenly found themselves to be ex-Jesuits — the popular reaction to the suppression: pol

The Napoleonic Continental System: Local, European, and Global Experiences and Consequences

The Napoleonic Continental System: Local, European, and Global Experiences and Consequences Location: Amsterdam, NL, International Institute of Social History Date: May 19-21, 2011 Since 2004, several exciting interdisciplinary conferences on the Napoleonic Empire have re-conceptualized the Napoleonic era as a period of intense political, military, social, and economic transformation on the local and European level. This conference will highlight the role of the Continental System in the Empire and beyond. Though relatively neglected compared to other aspects of the Napoleonic Wars and Empire, the Continental System has been interpreted as either “defensive” or “offensive” in nature. Scholars continue to debate its short and long-term consequences for economic development in Europe and North America. Regarded as both an economic and military structure, many scholars note that it became increasingly coercive after 1810. Some scholars argue the System discredited and d
