The [Oxford] Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Science and
Technology in Islam, one in a series of four reference works on Islamic
studies, will be published in 2013 as a part of Oxford's award-winning
reference program, which includes The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World
and Oxford Islamic Studies Online. The two-volume encyclopedia will include
over 300 entries with maps, figures, etc.
The Encyclopedia is currently seeking submissions for
entries ranging from
750 to 4,000 words on the philosophical, scientific and
technological dimensions of Islam and the Muslim world.
Individual entries are planned in the following areas:
.
Biographies of major figures of philosophy, science, and
technology from the classical through the modern period
such as Ibn Sina, Ibn Tufayl, Jabir ibn Hayyan, al-Majriti, etc.
. Overviews
of important scientific, philosophical, and religious
concepts in the Islamic tradition, such as theories,
models, and the relationship between religion and science
. Overviews of important scientific and
philosophical disciplines
such as Mutazilism, Ishraqiyyah, the Peripatetics,
neo-Platonism, etc.
. Analyses
of key terms such as the soul, substance, accident,
matter, etc.
. Summaries
of important scientific and theoretical movements and
schools of thought
.
Instruments and devices, such as maps, paper, mills, tools, etc.
. Main
institutions for the learning of science and philosophy,
including schools, libraries, and observatories
. Major
events, including discoveries, inventions, and encounters.

work of scholarship are encouraged to contact
