CfP: IET Conference on the History of Technology of Ireland, Dublin, 21 September 2019

IET Conference on the History of Technology of Ireland, Dublin, 21 September 2019

This one day conference, to be held at the Clayton Hotel, Bullsbridge, Dublin on Saturday 21st September 2019, will explore, by means of presentations in response to this Call for Papers, the many historical engineering and technological innovations, in all disciplines, created on and from the island of Ireland.

Some examples of the wide range of these historical engineering achievements are the gateway of transatlantic cables in the west coast of Ireland in the 19th and early 20th century, Harry Ferguson's original tractor design, John Boyd Dunlop's invention of the pneumatic tyre, Ulster's maritime and heavy engineering heritage, the more recent evolution of Ireland as one of Europe's leading research centres in ICT hardware, the centenary in 2019 of Marconi's first east-west radio call from Ballybunion, Co. Kerry and the first transatlantic flight by Alcock and Brown landing near Marconi's wireless station at Clifden, Co.Galway.

The objective of this conference is to highlight this diverse heritage.

The conference will be of interest to engineers, heritage and museum professionals, historians, archivists, academics and those interested in the history of innovation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEM) plus the general public.

We invite proposals for typically 20 minute paper presentations ( exceptionally 30 minute offers will be considered) or panels of 2 or 3 papers on the history of innovation, engineering and technology as well as the preservation and interpretation thereof. Strong preference will be given to panels that reflect diversity e.g. diversity in affiliations, gender and or professional rank.

Proposals of no more than 200 words, together with the name, institutional affiliation and any special requirements e.g. accessibility should be Emailed to Anne Locker, Manager IET Library and Archives (alocker@theiet.org) no later than 26th April 2019.

The one day conference will be held on Saturday 21st September in the Clayton Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin, an accessible venue.

Our conference will take place immediately prior to the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2019. We anticipate that our association with ECOC may result in a number of papers on the history of communications engineering and technology but not exclusively so.
