Politics, Policies and Ethics of HIV/AIDS: Past and Present

Politics, Policies and Ethics of HIV/AIDS: Past and Present

Warwick University’s Centre for the History of Medicine will be holding a Sexual Health Awareness Week (SHAW) from the 23rd-27th November 2009. SHAW will provide information on sexual health, raising awareness amongst students, while also exploring the University’s encounter with STDs - in particular its experience of the emergence of HIV/AIDS in the early 1980s and 90s. Health activists and public health scholars, as well as ex-students and former staff, will help us to explore the shifts that have occurred in perceptions of STDs and in sexual health politics.

A Witness Seminar on 24th November will feature some of the most prominent names in HIV/AIDS research and activism over the last three decades, including the founding members of major UK and international HIV/AIDS-related charities such as Sir Nick Partridge OBE, Tony Whitehead MBE, Dr Rupert Whitaker and Simon Watney:

A Conference on 25th November brings together international scholars working on HIV/AIDS infection in its national and global contexts since the 1980s. Participants will identify different forms of political engagement and activism, and the changes within these, since the first appearance of the disease:
