Centre for Science Studies at the Department of
Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Denmark (http://css.au.dk/en/) invites applications for
a permanent position as Associate Professor in history of mathematics beginning
summer 2013. The Centre for Science Studies forms part of the Faculty of
Science and Technology, and is responsible for research and education in
history and philosophy of science and in science communication.
Candidates must document a strong international research record within history of mathematics. In addition, candidates must document teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate level.
Demonstration of talent for research leadership, for attracting external funding, and for training of young researchers are additional qualifications. Experience with academic administration is desirable.
The centre aims at a high degree of collaboration between history, philosophy and sociology of science, and priority will be given to candidates with profiles that include such collaboration or similar forms of proven cross-disciplinary interests.
Duties will include instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level within history of mathematics as well as contribution to courses in history of science generally and to courses in philosophy of mathematics and computer science. The ability to teach courses in other areas of science studies will be appreciated but is not required.
The successful candidate is expected to participate actively in the strategic development of the centre’s research focus on studies of contemporary science and in developing new teaching initiatives in science studies broadly conceived. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of the centre’s activities and to be present on a daily basis.
