Call for Papers: Western Medicine in China, 1800-1950

On June 22-23, 2013 Peking University Center for History
of Medicine and IUPUI will host, in Beijing, a joint second international
research conference “Western Medicine in China, 1800-1950,” in order to
facilitate communication between scholars from China and abroad to share the
results of their research, and to expand this field of scholarship.
The topics include (but are not only limited to) the
following in relation to China:
- the dissemination and development of Western medicine
(biomedicine);
- medical archives and research on the history of medical
institutions;
- Euro-American and Japanese influence on the development
of Western medicine;
- Chinese-Western medical philanthropy;
- the history of diseases.
The conference will be in Chinese and English and will be
hosted in Beijing at Peking University Health Science Center. The conference
will select the best papers to edit as a volume for publication. There is no
conference fee for participants, and food and lodging for some participants
will be covered. Graduate students are particularly welcome to apply, the best
graduate student proposal will be funded with international airfare,
accommodation and food during the conference, and a small research stipend to
aid research in China on the history of Western medicine. Please include a
short research proposal describing the significance of your proposed research
and the archives you plan to use in China.
Please submit an abstract of approximately 300 words
