Hixon-Riggs Early Career Fellowship in Science and Technology Studies, Harvey Mudd College
Harvey Mudd College (Claremont, California) is looking
for an early career scholar in Science and Technology Studies, who works in the
area of “techno-science and expert cultures.” We invite scholars whose work
draws on anthropology, communication, history, media studies, philosophy, or
sociology to bring an empirical and critical perspective to this theme.
Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective institution
that offers majors in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. This
position, funded by the Hixon Riggs Program for Responsive Science and
Engineering, is housed in the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and
the Arts – an interdisciplinary department supporting the college’s liberal
arts program. HMC’s membership in the Claremont Colleges consortium allows
significant opportunities for collaboration with colleagues at the other
Claremont Colleges and the Claremont Graduate University, especially in the
Intercollegiate STS Program. Situated approximately 35 miles east of downtown
Los Angeles, Claremont offers easy access to LA’s cultural scene.
This 1 to 2-year early-career fellowship balances teaching
and research.
The fellow will teach one undergraduate course per
semester. In addition, he or she will direct a faculty reading group on the
theme of expert cultures in the first year, and organize and host a workshop or
conference on the same topic in the second year. We expect him or her to act as
a catalyst, furthering conversations among faculty and students. In addition to
pursuing his or her own research in the area, the scholar will work closely
with the Hixon program director and other faculty at the college.
Harvey Mudd College offers a competitive salary and
benefits, some support for travel and research, and mentoring opportunities.
Second-year renewal is contingent upon successful performance in the first
year.
Qualifications include a strong academic record in STS.
The ideal candidate may be trained in any number of disciplines, but should
have a solid social scientific or humanistic methodological, analytical, and
theoretical foundation, be interested in questions related to science, technology,
society and culture, and ready to work in a highly interdisciplinary and
academically challenging environment.
Applicants are expected to have completed the
requirements for a PhD, including submission of their dissertation, prior to
joining Harvey Mudd College. Please send a letter of application, CV, a short
research statement, a brief writing sample, a teaching portfolio including
testimony of effective teaching, two sample syllabi for proposed courses, and a
statement of teaching philosophy to: Hixon Search, Department of Humanities,
Social Sciences, and the Arts, Harvey Mudd College, 301 Platt Bvd., Claremont
CA 91711. Please also arrange for the submission of three letters of
recommendation. The letter of application should address the candidate's
commitment to effectively teaching students from diverse backgrounds and
promoting a diverse academic environment. Harvey Mudd College, an Equal
Opportunity Employer, is committed to the recruitment of candidates
historically underrepresented on college faculties. Further questions may be
addressed to Marianne de Laet, delaet@g.hmc.edu,
Hixon director and chair of the search committee. Application deadline:
February 7, 2014.
