JOB: Head Librarian MPIWG Berlin
The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science
(MPIWG)
seeks a Head Librarian (to begin no later than
January/February 2015)
to:
· Support the
research of scholars in a wide range of specialties
· Oversee the
acquisition of works in both paper and digital form
· Coordinate
an extensive inter-library loan program
· Supervise a
staff of 6 fulltime librarians
· Develop
strategies for integrating new techniques and sources for interdisciplinary
research in the humanities
· Represent the Institute at national and
international forums on the future of research in the humanities
The MPIWG is the world’s largest research institute in
the history of science, with projects spanning many disciplines, cultures,
languages, and epochs, see <mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de>. Its library contains
70.000 printed volumes, including a small collection of rara and many digital
sources. With the support of its library, the MPIWG has made pioneering
contributions to the digital humanities.
Qualifications for the position include:
· A
university degree in a relevant field (not necessarily library science)
· Experience
as a research librarian
· Familiarity
with digital research collections and methods
· Mastery of
several languages
· Ability to
lead and commitment to aiding researchers
The position is ranked up to the BAT Ia / TVöD E15 level
in the German system, which roughly corresponds to that of associate professor.
Salary is set by both the position’s rank and individual factors, including
social security benefits.
