FAMILY IN MEDICAL AND LEGAL DISCOURSE
The
GSA Family and Kinship Network is organizing a number of panels on
"Family in Medical and Legal Discourse" for the 2016 Annual Conference
of the German Studies Association, September 29th-October 2nd in San
Diego, CA. We invite proposals for individual papers and pre-formed
panels (normally consisting of three papers) treating the topic of
family and kinship and medical and legal interventions in our
understanding of these groupings. Some considerations might be: How are
families formed and recognized under either or both of these lenses? To
what extent do blood ties and law constitute families and to what extent
do they constitute themselves in opposition to these forces? What
changes occur when medical/genetic and legal assumptions prove to be
false or misleading? We welcome papers from a wide variety of
perspectives, whether literary, historical, cultural, philosophical or
theological on the formation (or dissolution) of family groups and the
disciplines that sanction these formations.
Deadline February 1, 2016
