The Max Planck Society and the Technische Universität Berlin (Faculty I, Institute of the History of Philosophy, Literatur and Technology) invite applications for a joint 

Max Planck Research Group Leader position/ University professorship (employment) - remuneration in line with salary grade W2 

for the field of History of Science 

at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) and the TU Berlin. 

Reference number: I-260/16 (starting at the earliest possible/for 5 years) 

Working field: The successful applicant will serve as a Max Planck Research Group Leader at the MPIWG. She or he will be required to cover the area named above in research and teaching (with a reduced teaching load of one course per semester) at the Technische Universität Berlin. She or he will contribute to the organization of the MA Programme “Geschichte und Kultur von Wissenschaft und Technik” and the BA Programme “Kultur und Technik mit Schwerpunkt Wissenschafts- und Technikgeschichte” (courses can be taught in German or English). 

Requirements: Candidates must qualify for appointment according to the requirements of § 100 BerlHG, including a university degree, an excellent scientific record demonstrated by a PhD and a postdoctoral degree (Habilitation) or equivalent, pedagogic and educational capabilities, to be given proof of by a teaching portfolio (for more information see TUB website, quick access no. 144242). 

The successful candidate will have a distinguished research background in the history of science, either directly or as a focal area within the social sciences, humanities, engineering, a science discipline or interdisciplinary field of study (e.g., area studies, cultural studies, or history of technology). Applicants should have received their PhD no longer than five years before the application deadline. 

Successful applicants will have the aptitude to lead a research group at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. In addition to administrative support and the working opportunities at the institute, the endowment will include funds to employ research fellows, to invite visiting scholars, and to award scholarships. The group will be funded for a period of five years. 

The successful applicant will be required to participate in the Max Planck Institute’s cooperation ventures in establishing the Berlin Center for the History of Knowledge.
