Call for Expressions of Interest to Host SPSP 2024

Site for the 10th International Conference (2024). Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice (SPSP)

Deadline: May 15, 2022

The Organizing Committee of the Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice (SPSP) invites expressions of interest to host the 10th international conference of the SPSP to be held in 2024, most likely during the northern hemisphere summer. We will consider bids from any location, but have a preference for a site in North America, since the 6th conference, in 2016, was the last held in North America.

The local hosts will be responsible for all local arrangements and budgeting, with the SPSP Organizing Committee taking responsibility for programming, plenary speakers, and other non-local arrangements. We anticipate a 3 day conference, similar in format to the previous conferences, with approximately 150-200 attendees. In addition, we expect to accommodate a pre-conference workshop session (1 day); an optional post-conference workshop (1 day) would be an ideal addition, if possible. Space for a poster session and a book exhibit are encouraged. At previous conferences, plenary speakers (2 to 3) have been funded for travel and accommodation; therefore, registration fees need to be set to cover these costs in addition to room charges, refreshments, etc. We also ask that the budget build in monies that can be used toward SPSP website maintenance as the organization has no membership fees or additional sources of income. We strongly encourage all efforts to reduce costs for delegates (especially students), for instance by including lower-cost options for lodging and meals, and by applying for local and external funding.

For more details of previous conferences and the organization’s mandate, please see http://www.philosophy-science-practice.org.

Expressions of interest, in no more than 1,000 words, should contain the following information:

(1) Practical information and provisional budget, with particular attention to the following: meeting rooms and audio-visual facilities (in light of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, please specify opportunities for hybrid sessions or online participation in the conference); accommodation (a mixture of types of lodging is desirable); arrangements for registration and program preparation and printing; ideas for promoting the conference; coffee/tea breaks, meals, and receptions; domestic/international travel options; accessibility of the conference site; any other activities or workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference; ideas and prospects for obtaining external or internal funds to support the conference; provision of support staff; proposed local arrangements chair(s) and committee members, and their prior experience in organizing similar events.

(2) Intellectual reasons, stating why the proposed hosting institution/location is appropriate for SPSP, considering its goals and mandate.

Expressions of interest should be submitted by e-mail by 15 May 2022 to Matthew Lund.
