CfP: Science and Protestantism in Eastern Europe, 1700-2000

Ábrahám Kovács (János Selye University, Slovakia) and Matthew Daniel Eddy (Durham University) are seeking one further essay of 8,000 words for a special journal issue on Science and Protestantism in Eastern Europe, 1700-2000. The remit for the volume is as follows:

Studies on the historical relationship between science and religion in Eastern Europe often focus on the pervasive presence of Catholicism and its impact on natural knowledge. But there was a flourishing interface between science in Calvinist, Lutheran, Baptist, Adventist and Unitarian communities living across the region from the Reformation to modern times. This volume focuses on these groups and examines the longstanding relationship between science and Protestantism in Eastern Europe from circa 1700 to 2000. Focusing on literature written in Latin, Hungarian, Romanian, German and English, and covering a variety of thinkers with different ethnic affiliations, the essays ask to what extent scientific and theological ideas clashed or co-existed within the educational and cultural frameworks fostered by Protestant denominations.
