Era físic i investigador, pare de l' enciclopèdia de Menorca i coordinador científic de l'Institut d'Estudis de Menorca. La categoria intel·lectual de Vidal Hernàndez fou reconeguda àmpliament, amb premis com el Ramon Llull (2006), i el Canigó (2012). Vidal Hernández es llicencià en ciències físiques per la Universitat de Barcelona el 1968, fou professor de física de l’estat sòlid a la mateixa universitat (1970-1974) i ha estat el director i alma mater de l’Enciclopèdia de Menorca des de 1977. Immediatament després de la creació de l’Institut Menorquí d’Estudis fou nombrat el seu secretari general primer i el coordinador científic posteriorment.
