CFP-BSHS Annual Conference Exeter

Call for Papers

British Society for the History of Science Annual Conference, 2011 Thursday 14 - Sunday 17 July 2011, University of Exeter

The BSHS Annual Conference will take place at the University of Exeter from 14 – 17 July 2011.
The conference will start with a buffet lunch on 14 July, followed by a plenary lecture.  The main venue is the Queen’s Building, located on the main campus of the University of Exeter, a former private botanical garden and arboretum. The conference dinner will be held in Holland Hall, overlooking the Exe valley.
The programme will include parallel themed sessions, plenary lectures, education and outreach activities, and an opportunity to explore the resources available in Exeter for historians of STM.  An inclusive conference package will be available.
Exeter is served by fast and comfortable rail and coach connections to major UK destinations. It has an airport with regular direct connections to Amsterdam and Paris as well as UK domestic flights.  Another airport nearby served by low cost carriers is Bristol International Airport. The BSHS will be coordinating a car-sharing scheme for those wishing to minimise their transport costs.
Besides the attractions of Exeter, especially its twelfth-century Norman cathedral, the city itself is an ideal base for extending your stay and exploring the spectacular coastlines and moors of Devon and Cornwall, with their many geological and archaeological remains.
The Programme Committee invites papers or sessions from historians of science, technology and medicine and their colleagues in the wider scholarly community on any theme, topic or period.
Proposals are welcomed from researchers of all nationalities at all stages of their careers. Participation is in no way limited to members of the Society although members will receive a discount on the registration fee.
Session proposals should normally consist of three or four papers, with or without a commentator. Sessions will be 90 minutes to 2 hours long. Proposals for alternative types of session (eg. round-tables or witness seminars) are strongly encouraged.  Please discuss this with us in advance of the Call for Papers deadline: contact bshs2011programme@bshs.org.uk Proposals for individual papers should include an abstract of no more than 250 words. Abstracts should not contain footnotes and should be comprehensible to a non-specialist audience.
Full details on how to submit session proposals and individual abstracts will shortly be available on the BSHS website, http://www.bshs.org.uk/bshs/conferences/index.html
The deadline for submitting a session or abstract is 21 January 2011.
