Predoctoral Position at the MPI for the History of Science, Berlin
The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in
Berlin, Department II (Lorraine Daston), announces
one Predoctoral Position for up to three years, starting
date January 01, 2013.
Outstanding junior scholars are invited to apply. The
position is awarded in conjunction with the research project Acoustic Theatre,
1750-1930, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (http://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/en/research/projects/DeptII_Tkaczyk_Acoustic/index_html)
Research projects may concern any culture or historical period
(including the present). Although projects must have a history of science
component, both the human and natural sciences are included under that rubric
and additional relevant disciplinary perspectives are welcome. Possible topics
include (by way of suggestion only):
Ø The history of acoustics (especially architectural
acoustics, audio engineering) Ø The history of hearing (physiology, psychology)
Ø The cultural heritage of sound (e.g. “sound archives”, “sound art“, “acoustic
media”, “material culture of sound“, “auditory memory”) Ø The history of key
concepts associated with sound studies (e.g. “acoustic ecology”, “sound
epistemology“)
The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science is an
international and interdisciplinary research institute (http://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/en/index.html).
The colloquium language is English; it is expected that candidates will be able
to present their own work and discuss that of others fluently in that language.
Applications may however be submitted in German, English, or French.
The position may be endowed as a predoctoral fellow
employment rated 50% TVöD E13 in the German system, or as a fellowship (monthly
stipend: € 1.365). Candidates of all nationalities are welcome to apply;
applications from women are especially welcomed. The Max Planck Society is
