Call
for papers
Announcing a two-day international conference at the University
of Oxford: 'Naval
Expertise and the Making of the Modern World'
To be held at Wolfson
College, Oxford on
10th and 11th May 2013.
This conference will explore the generation of
expertise - scientific, medical, administrative and technological - in naval
contexts and trace how such developments
helped to shape the modern world. Situating current research in naval and maritime history within broader inter-disciplinary debates, the conference will examine
the role of naval expertise and institutions in historical development. The major themes of this conference will address naval contributions to four commonly recognised
and overlapping features of 'modernity': Globalization; Industrialization; Science and Medicine; the Modern State.
