Job Opportunity at Thackray Museum
Project Officer
(Putting the Magic Back into Medicine)
The Thackray Medical Museum aims to be the UK’s leading
medical museum. We are now seeking a Project Officer for a fixed-term contract
to play a key role in delivering our new project, “Putting the Magic Back into
Medicine” funded by Arts Council England Strategic Support Funding. The
successful applicant will have experience of working from collections to
develop inspiring and engaging interpretations for a range of target audiences.
This project will lay the foundations for transforming
the Museum’s identity by overcoming the perception of medicine as scary and
serious, to make medicine magical for all our audiences: leisure, learning,
conference and corporate. We will combine the Museum’s mission of increasing
public understanding of the history of medicine with the popular appeal of
magic, as practised in the past and the present.
As a medical museum, audience research has shown that our
current interpretation needs balancing with more positive stories of health and
medicine. This project will develop a strong and positive theme combining
intriguing history and inspirational contemporary stories, while asking more
profound questions of the collection in terms of how we understand the links
between medicine and magic both in the past and in the present.
We are seeking a project officer (fixed-term contract to
April 2013 or freelance) to audit the collections for relevant and engaging
objects, and to lead on developing and implementing plans for a new touring
exhibition and more accessible interpretation of the Wilkinson Gallery of
pharmaceutical jars. The project officer will work closely with the Museum’s
existing curatorial and education team and will be managed by the Director of
Collections & Interpretation to realise the vision for the exhibition.
