Project Leader (Archival Research and Outreach)

The Marine Biological Association (MBA) is seeking a Project Leader for an Archival Research and Outreach project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), subject to final confirmation.

This is a part-time (50% FTE), temporary (February 2013 to October 2013) position and will be based at the National Marine Biological Library (NMBL) in Plymouth. The salary will be between £18,500 and £19,411 per annum pro rata + pension, depending on skills and experience.

The object of the project is to prepare several events across Plymouth to mark the 125th anniversary since the inauguration of the Laboratory of the MBA, including a small exhibition at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and preparing educational toolkits for teaching and outreach events. This will involve working with a small number of volunteers to digitize items in the MBA Archive Collection.

Essential criteria:

The successful candidate will hold a degree in history, archival studies or a cognate discipline. In addition, the successful candidate will have the following:

    Experience of working with and interpreting historical materials, including photographs and letters.

    Experience of planning and delivering a wide range of public-facing events.

    Ability to communicate clearly and confidently with varied audiences, both written and spoken.

    Experience in the use of standard software packages, e.g. the MS Office suite.

    Demonstrable experience of successfully working within a team.

    An interest in marine life or a willingness to learn about it.

Desirable skills

The following would be an advantage but are not essential:

    Awareness of current heritage activities in Plymouth.

    Good understanding of science and history of science.

    Experience of working in partnership.

    Experience of managing team projects.

    Volunteering experience or experience of having worked with volunteers.

    Creative and self-motivated.
