Job Description
The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree and provide high quality teaching in History of Medicine, including ethical issues in medicine up to the present, for an interdisciplinary range of students at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level.

This fixed-term, full-time lectureship arises from a Leverhulme Trust award to Professor Holger Maehle and is tenable for six months from 1 October 2013.  In addition to the criteria specified above, the successful applicant will also contribute to the lively research culture of the Department, which has particular strengths in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine, and the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease (www.dur.ac.uk/chmd).  Relevant teaching experience is required and publications in history of medicine are desirable.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:

·       Provide teaching and examining for the undergraduate modules 'History and Theory of Medicine' and 'Biomedical Ethics: Past and Present'. 
 
·       Supervise undergraduate dissertations within the field of history and ethics of medicine
 
·       Teach the postgraduate module 'Ethics, Medicine and History'
 
·       Contribute to the other teaching and examining in the MA programme in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine (HPSM)
 
·       Manage the MA programme in HPSM
 
·       Contribute occasionally to the teaching or examining of other undergraduate or postgraduate modules of the Department as directed by the Chairman of the Board of Studies in Philosophy.
 
·       Contribute to the research culture of the Department of Philosophy and the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease
·       Perform administrative duties appropriate to the level of appointment, as agreed with the Head of Department.
Person Specification

ESSENTIAL
·       PhD or equivalent doctoral degree
·       The ability to provide high quality teaching in History of Medicine, including ethical issues in medicine up to the present
·       Be able to teach and examine in the undergraduate modules 'History and Theory of Medicine' and 'Biomedical Ethics: Past and Present'
·       Be able to supervise undergraduate dissertations within the field of history and ethics of medicine
·       Be able to teach the postgraduate module 'Ethics, Medicine and History' and to contribute to the other teaching and examining in the MA programme in History & Philosophy of Science and Medicine (HPSM)
·       Be able to manage the MA programme in HPSM
·       Have teaching experience in history of medicine
·       Demonstrate willingness to contribute to the research culture of the Department of Philosophy and the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease

DESIRABLE

·       Provide evidence of plans for future research that will enhance the research profile of the Department of Philosophy and the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease.
·       Have research publications in history of medicine
