Doctoral studentships (PhD) in Science and Technology Studies, University of Wuppertal


The Interdisciplinary Center for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) of the University of Wuppertal, Germany, invites applications for

two doctoral studentships (PhD)

to run for three years from April 1, 2015
remunerated at 65% of statutory workload (rating: E 13 TV-L).

The Interdisciplinary Center for Science and Technology Studies (IZWT) is a central organizational unit of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal dedicated to research into sociological, historical, and philosophical aspects of the structure and development of science and technology. A pilot interdisciplinary graduate training project entitled “Continuity and Change in Science and Technology from 1800” is due to be launched this year. Focusing on the developmental dynamics of science and technology, the project will analyze concepts of progress, regression, standstill, revolution, paradigm change, innovation, exnovation, tradition and change, old and new etc. The aim is to develop new approaches to the dimensions of continuity and change, which are commonly conceived as polar opposites.

Subject area and personal qualifications
- university degree (master’s or equivalent) in history, mathematics, science/engineering, philosophy, sociology, or Science and Technology Studies
- ability to organize, plan and communicate in a team setting; competence and willingness to engage in independent research in an interdisciplinary cooperative environment; excellent English skills.

Tasks and conditions
- doctoral degree to be completed in the context of the research project “Continuity and Change in Science and Technology from 1800”
- submission of an independent PhD thesis concerned with theories and case studies on continuity and change, “old” and “new” in science and technology; interdisciplinary supervision will be provided; for further information on the research program visit

- development of an innovative training program in interdisciplinary cooperation with IZWT professors (Profs. Heinze, Remmert, Schiemann, Volkert, and Weber); this will involve joint planning of courses on current issues of Science and Technology Studies, as well as the organization of conferences, workshops, and guest lectures
- a several-month-long stay abroad during the second year of the doctoral program is expressly encouraged.
