CfP: International Conference History of Physics

3rd International Conference on the History of Physics under the auspices of the European Physical Society

4th Early-Career Conference for Historians in the Physical Sciences of the American Institute of Physics
17-21 October 2018. Donostia-San Sebastian (Spain)

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the European Physical Society (EPS). In this context, and following the success of two previous meetings in Cambridge (United Kingdom) and Pöllau (Austria), we are happy to announce the Third International Conference on the History of Physics, under the auspices of the EPS, which will take place in Donostia/San Sebastian (Spain) in October 17-21, 2018. The main goal of the conference is to provide a forum where historians of physics and physicists meet to reflect on the importance of the history of science for the development of contemporary physics, not only in its conceptual evolution but also at the institutional, organizational and educational levels; as well as to promote the contribution of practicing physicists to the highly professionalised discipline of the history of physics. On this occasion, this exchange will be enhanced by the joint celebration of the conference of early-career historians of physics, a bi-annual event sponsored by the History Center of the American Institute of Physics.
The organizing committee welcomes abstracts of no more than 500 words for 20 minutes’ oral presentations and/or posters on any subject related to the history of physics including geophysics, space physics, biophysics, physical chemistry etc., especially, but not limited, to the following topics:
  • The history of institutions, academies, and scientific societies.
  • The roads to and from applied physics
  • Pedagogical and research traditions in physics
  • The impact of computing on experimental and theoretical physics
  • The role of technology in the development of physics
  • Gender and physics
  • New historiographical approaches in the history of physics
  • Boundaries of physics
  • Applied history of physics
  • Digital humanities and the history of physics
Special sections will be devoted to the following subjects:
  • Physics in the construction of Europe
  • The origins of the European Physical Society
Please send abstracts through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=hopdss2018 by March 15th, 2018, including the following information:
Title, abstract, author, institutional affiliation, oral and/or poster format and early-career stage (if applicable).*

* Early-career status includes any postgraduate student working towards a PhD in the history of physics as well as early post-docs. A committee of early-career scholars will be appointed to select contributions from the submitted abstracts and to organise specific sessions throughout the conference. Through the generosity of the AIP, a number of grants to meet the cost of travel and accommodation will be available for early-career scholars.
