Postdoc Position at the Institute Vienna Circle in Vienna

The University of Vienna (20 faculties and centres, 178 fields of study, approx. 9.800
members of staff, about 90.000 students) seeks to fill the position as soon as possible of a

University Assistant (post doc) at the Institute Vienna Circle

The advertised position is situated in the Institute Vienna Circle (IVC) in the Faculty of Philosophy and Education.


The IVC stands in the tradition of the historical “Vienna Circle”. In this sense the IVC supports philosophical research projects that respond critically and constructively to issues arising in the special sciences. A further important agenda of the IVC is the integration of different disciplines focused on the sciences (philosophy, history, sociology). The IVC is also dedicated to the documentation, reconstruction and further development of logical empiricism. There exists a close cooperation with the Department of Philosophy (esp. the chairs for philosophy of science) and the “Vienna Circle Society”.


Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description: 


Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This involves 


- Developing and strengthening the independent research profile in an area that stands in the tradition of the Vienna Circle, broadly conceived (e.g.: philosophy of the social sciences, logic, epistemology, political philosophy) 


- participation in conferences organized by the IVC


- contributions to publications of the IVC


- International publications and presentations 


- Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding 


- Preparing / writing a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis 


- Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement 


- Supervision of students 


- Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance 


- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

Profile:


To be successful, applicants must fulfil the following conditions:


- Doctoral degree/PhD degree in philosophy or another relevant discipline


- Documented research interests and achievements in the tradition of the Vienna Circle, understood in the widest possible sense


- Excellent command of written and spoken English 


In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have experience of working on research projects, publications in renowned, subject-relevant media, and international presentation experience. Experience abroad is a desirable qualification.
