CfP: "Figures" in the history of nutrition
It
is time for H-Nutrition’s annual short-essay series again. This year's
series is entitled "Figures." We invite authors to analyze an object or
image that you find particularly meaningful in your study of the history
of nutrition. Perhaps it is the food advertisement that sparked your
interest for your first project. Maybe you could tell us about the
calorimeter displayed in the library. Or even the bathroom scale that
made the scholarly suddenly very personal. Do you use material culture
when you teach students about the history of food and food science? Have
you come across particularly striking food packaging or nutritional
labeling? What visual source figures prominantly in your work on how
food or drink intersect health and science?
There are no
restrictions on geographical location or time period. Preference will be
given to submissions that speak to the history of nutrition
specifically rather than food history more generally. Suggested length
is 500-800 words; please cite secondary sources; and at least one
illustration is strongly encouraged. Each essay will be vetted by
1-2 editors before publication on H-Nutrition in Fall 2019. Authors are
encouraged to upload their submissions through the H-Nutrition portal
using the orange "Start a Discussion" button at the top of our homepage
so that they will linked to their H-Net profiles (please ask an editor
if you need assistance either with updating your profile or with
submitting a post for review). Submission deadline: midnight on Monday,
August 5, 2019. H-Net contributions are peer reviewed and can be listed
on a CV.
