Call for Papers: Southeast Chapter of Society of Architectural Historians Annual Meeting

The Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH) will host its hold its 40th annual conference in Memphis, Tennessee, from November 2-5, 2022. As with all SESAH conferences, papers and sessions may address any aspect of the history of the built environment as well as any geographical region, historical period, or scale. We encourage papers and sessions focused on such themes as the Landscapes and Architectural Resources of the Civil Rights Movement, Landscapes/Architecture of Minority Communities, Post-World War II Architecture in the American South, Twentieth Century Urban Planning in the American South, and the Legacy of the Southern Music Industry on the Cultural Landscape. We also expect sessions on subjects related to European, Historic, Medieval, and Southern Architecture.

SESAH is now accepting abstracts for individual papers or proposals for session panels, consisting of three papers and a chair. Participants need not work in, reside in, or focus their research within the Southeast or the twelve-state SESAH region. Please submit your paper or session proposal to Mason Toms by May 6, 2022

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Paper proposals should be in either Word or PDF format and be arranged in the following order: title of the proposed paper, an abstract of no more than 300 words, applicant’s name, professional affiliation (independent scholars should list themselves as such), contact information, and five keywords. This should be followed by a professional resume or academic CV, and a short biosketch of no more than 250 words (to use for introductions in sessions). Proposals for session panels should include the title of the session; the names, affiliations, contact information, and CVs of all participants; and abstracts of each paper.  

Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by June 17, 2022. Authors of accepted proposals must submit the complete text of their papers to their session chair by September 30, 2022. SESAH reserves the right to drop presenters who do not fulfill this requirement. All participants must be current members of SESAH by the meeting date and must register for the conference by October 14, 2022. Paper presentations are limited to 20 minutes maximum. All presentations will be made face-to-face at the Memphis conference in a digital format (PowerPoint, etc.).

SESAH offers up to three $500 travel grants for graduate students and one $500 travel grant for an emerging professional. Applications are due with the abstract. Acceptance of an abstract is considered a commitment to attend the conference.

ABOUT MEMPHIS:

The 2022 SESAH Conference at Memphis will consist of two days of paper sessions on Thursday and Friday, a plenary session and reception, a business lunch meeting and awards ceremony, self-guided walking tours, and a Saturday Study Tour of various city landmarks. Supported by the University of Memphis and Memphis Public Library, the keynote speaker is Brent Leggs, Senior Vice President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a Harvard University Loeb Fellow. The conference venue is the SpringHill Suites Marriot at 85 West Court Avenue in downtown Memphis; the conference room rate (single/double) is $159.00. The conference registration fee is $225 for members and $125 for spouse/partners. Registration fees are waived for students with valid student I.D. Saturday Study Tours will be $75 with an optional tour of Graceland for an additional fee. A $25 late fee for both registrations and study tours will be applied after October 14, 2022.
