M.A. program "Health and Society in South Asia",Heidelberg University

Dear colleagues, we welcome applications for our M.A. degree "Health and Society in South Asia" (MAHASSA) at Heidelberg University.   MAHASSA is a two-year degree with a focus on Medical Anthropology and South Asian Studies. It is integrated with the curriculum of Heidelberg University’s South Asia Ins­titute, one of the world’s leading centers of interdis­ciplinary research and teaching on South Asia. This allows students to integrate South Asian languages, geography, politics, etc. into their plan of study. Most students base their Masters Thesis on field research conducted in South Asia. The language of instruction is English. Contents The program combines Medical Anthro­pology with South Asian Studies. POLITICS AND DRUGS. Pharmaceutical research and drug management in Post-WWII and Cold War Europe. Rome, 29-30 November 2012 Venue: Section of History of Medicine, University of Rome La Sapienza, Workshop supported by ESF DRUGS Network Research Networking Programme (drughistory.eu) The aim of the workshop is to explore the relation between the political environment and the creation of drug standards for production, management and clinical use. Public policies with regard to drugs were subject to strong political pressure in the Post-war scenario, increasingly so with the onset of the Cold War. In this context, Drugs (and the whole high-tech industry surrounding them) were also used as instruments of political influence and prestige. Philanthropic foundations, governmental activities, international organizations, as well as individual initiatives, shaped the role of the new "wonder drugs" available after WWII (antibiotics, psychoactive compounds, antimalarial drugs). The Historical Library of the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library at Yale University is pleased to announce its fifth annual Ferenc Gyorgyey Research Travel Award for use of the Historical Library. The Medical Historical Library, located in New Haven, Connecticut, holds one of the country’s largest collections of rare medical books, journals, prints, photographs, and pamphlets. Special strengths are the works of Hippocrates, Galen, Vesalius, Boyle, Harvey, Culpeper, Haller, Priestley, and S. Weir Mitchell, and works on anesthesia, and smallpox inoculation and vaccination. The Library owns over fifty medieval and renaissance manuscripts, Arabic and Persian manuscripts, and over 300 medical incunabula.   The notable Clements C. Call for Papers on the Topic of Pregnancy and Birth for Hektoen International: A Journal of Medical Humanities http://www.hektoeninternational.org/aboutus.html Possible topics can include, but are not limited to, birth rituals in various cultural traditions; historical and literary depictions of medical care and midwifery, the role of the father, and labor companions (e.g. relatives, birthworkers, or doulas); related literature, art, and music (e.g. prenatal chant, Renaissance birth trays, related Dutch genre paintings on lovesickness and morality); ethical issues related to pregnancy; the experience of disability (of mother or child); In vitro fertilization and other types of technological assistance with pregnancy; and surrogacy.
