Papers are invited for an international conference to be held at the University of Exeter (UK) on 4-6 September 2017 , funded by the Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award for the project ‘The Medical World of Early Modern England, Wales and Ireland 1500-1715’ led by Professor Jonathan Barry and Dr Peter Elmer at Exeter (see the project website at http://practitioners.exeter.ac.uk/). This conference will consider the outputs from this project, in particular the database which has been created of more than 30,000 medical practitioners operating in the period, and the opportunities this offers for new research in the field. It will also consider comparative perspectives on early modern Britain, both spatially and temporally, and so welcomes papers from colleagues working on medical practice in other parts of Europe or its colonies, on other cultures (Islamic, Indian, Chinese etc) and also on the periods either side of our 1500-1715 focus, so that we can place the findings of the proj...

CHM invites applications for a Research Fellow for the project 'Prisoners, Medical Care and Entitlement to Health in England and Ireland, 1850-2000' The Research Fellow will conduct a specified programme of research on ‘Women, Health and Maternity in the English and Irish Criminal Justice Systems’, involving independent and collaborative historical research in archives and libraries in England and Ireland, along lines agreed with the project’s PIs. The Research Fellow will also advance and organise public outreach activities central to the project. CHEMICAL HERITAGE FOUNDATION CHEMISTRY IN THE AMERICAS, 1400-1800. 28th-29th April; Chemical Heritage Foundation, Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA, USA.   In early modern times historians used to say that the practice of their art had two eyes, chronology and geography. Together these envisioned the temporal and spatial extensions of the ordered sequences of actions which come to form the record of human history. Even in such basic terms, we nonetheless lack anything approaching coherent narratives of the chemical arts and sciences as practiced on the pre-modern American continent. This circumstance differentiates American historiographies from those of European, Arabic and some eastern Asian cultures, and thus provides a fundamental motivation for the topic of the Cain Conference 2017.
