Professorship in the History of Knowledge
The Max Planck Society and the Department of History and Cultural
Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin jointly invite applications
for a
Professorship in the History of Knowledge (W2; 5 years)
combined with a position as an
Independent Junior Research Group Leader
at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science.
The successful applicant will serve as an Independent Junior Research
Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science
(MPIWG). She or he will be required to cover the area named above in
research and teaching (with a reduced teaching load of one course per
semester) at the Freie Universität Berlin.
In accordance with article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act
(Berliner Hochschulgesetz), a Habilitation, junior professorship, or
equivalent postdoctoral qualification is required. For this position,
it is necessary that the nominee received her or his Ph.D. no longer
than five years ago.
The appointee will have a distinguished research background in the
history of science and/or knowledge, either directly or as a focal
area within her or his social science, humanities, engineering, or
science discipline, or interdisciplinary field of study (e.g., area
studies, cultural studies, or history of technology). It is expected
that applicants be highly qualified for the position as a Junior
Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for the History of
Science. In addition to administrative support and the working
opportunities at the institute, the endowment will include funds to
employ a research assistant, to invite visiting scholars, and to award
scholarships. Furthermore, she or he will possess an outstanding track
record of successful university teaching and research with a strong
international component. Experience with sponsored research is
desirable.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in the Max
Planck Institute’s cooperation ventures in the history of knowledge
with Berlin universities, as well as in other existing and projected
joint research projects.
The rank of this fixed-tenure vacancy is W2. The successful candidate
will be appointed for five years as a salaried employee with terms and
conditions comparable to those of a civil servant.
