CfA: Practices of Female Botanists

Keynote speakers: Anne Hodge (Curator of drawings and prints, National Gallery of Ireland) Valérie Chansigaud (Historian of Science, Independent scholar and author) The research centres TIL (Université de Bourgogne) and EMMA (Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3) are organizing a bilingual (French-English) international interdisciplinary conference on the role of women in the development of botany as part of visual, manuscript and print cultures, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period. We propose to foster discussions at the intersections of the history of natural sciences, print culture, book history, illustration studies, gender studies, plant studies and ecocriticism. Papers may focus on a wide variety of case studies pertaining to any geographical area, from herbals to non-fiction writing, from publishers’ and libraries’ archives to museum collections, or from the garden to the diary and to the printed book. They will address the role of women as amateur or professional bo

CfP: Sickness and Capitalism: New Essays on Public Health, Medicine, and the Environment

This new edited volume provides insights into how the history of capitalism can be analyzed in relation to the production of racial, gendered, and social inequalities in the field of public health and healthcare. While labor and environmental historians and social science researchers have explored how growing industrial productions have contributed to producing toxic residues (Boudia et al, 2021) that affect the health of workers and populations (Bécot & Le Naour, 2023), few books focusing on environmental deterioration and health have united the long-term history of pre-capitalist systems of exploitation and extraction of labor to the industrial society and the post-industrial era. Therefore, this new book will seek to explore these macro-social changes by focusing on diverse case studies addressing the health and social impacts of the plantationocene during the slavery and post-slavery eras (Nading, 2023; Wilson, 2023) as well as the colonial and post-colonial eras (Jobson, 2024)

CfP (RSA Boston): Natural History and Archival Epistemology in J.-B. Colbert’s France

In Jacob Soll’s 2009 monograph, The Information Master, Colbert’s activities and his promotion of science have been put under the magnifying glass to demonstrate an openly utilitarian use of the public sphere. Indeed, in Soll’s treatment, a letter of instructions sent by the minister to his son, an aspiring bureaucrat, closely resembled a blueprint to replace antiquarian erudition with technical know-how. While there is little doubt that possession and control of documents became constitutive of a new vision of ‘expertise’, the Académie des Sciences, since its inception in the 1660s, was actually slow in establishing a factual foundation for theorizing; its implementation of experimental protocols was also fractured between province and metropolitan center. It still relied on practitioners of the Republic of Letters, who had their own academies; and it could neither segregate nor co-opt the efforts of Cartesians and Jesuits, who were often perceived as partisan cultural groups. CfA: Understanding Scientific Disagreement Workshop, University of Bologna, 23–24 September 2024

Disagreement is ubiquitous: people, including scientists in all fields of knowledge, disagree about a wide variety of topics—from mundane facts about what’s the best way to reach the airport, to complex matters such as the degree of reliability of climate models. Clearly, disagreement plays a crucial role in virtually all our intellectual practices and can have significant social implications. Disagreement is a fundamental aspect of both scientific and mathematical practices. Whereas disagreement among scientists is often perceived as a sign of weakness or lack of objectivity, it is, in fact, an essential component that fosters the robustness and inclusivity of scientific inquiry. Moreover, understanding the role and epistemic significance of disagreement within scientific practices is crucial for improving the dissemination of scientific results and significantly impacts science education. This workshop aims to delve into the nature of scientific disagreement and its broader societal
