Novedad bibliográfica: Urban Narratives about Nature. Socio-Ecological Imaginaries between Science and Entertainment

Editor: Carlos Tabernero. When more than half of the Earth population lives in cities, and living conditions worldwide suffer from a steady increase in environmental issues, historical inquiry provides useful reflections and new perspectives on the present. Urban Narratives about Nature: Socio-Ecological Imaginaries between Science and Entertainment aims at generating specific historical knowledge concerning processes of production, circulation, and management of natural history narratives and the associated struggles for meaning within the socio-ecological relations involved. The city is a powerful storyteller, and this book, upon a relational perspective, provides a diverse and interrelated collection of case studies of urban-based production and circulation of narratives about nature. Altogether, these cases probe the complex relationships among scientific authority, public awareness, policymaking, corporate and political interests, and environmental advocacy, in effect expanding th...

CfP: Chemists as activists: From Linus Pauling to Green Chemistry, 14th International Conference on the History of Chemistry

A session of the 14th International Conference on the History of Chemistry (14 ICHC) , 11 to 14 June 2025, Valencia. The session aims to approach activist-chemists as epistemologically active actors and their role in the co-production of chemical knowledge. From the Cold War to the present, we want to explore exchange zones and public spheres in which chemists struggled for public recognition and scientific authority and opposed hegemonic chemical projects and practices of their time. Instead of assuming that resistance contributes to the failure of a chemical project, it may become a constructive force in technological development (Bauer, 1995). In the framework of the new participatory turn, activists’ protests outside a research institute, the citizens’ vote on a waste disposal facility, or a public debate to submit results to policy makers, all express: “a profound change in the terms and conditions under which scientific knowledge is produced, discussed and legitimated” (Bucchi, N...

CfP: P.O.I. (Points of Interest) - 1/2025: Philosophy and the sci-fi imaginary: new declinations of the subject

The six-month journal “P.O.I. – Points of Interest” invites you to contribute to the issue I/2025, developing the theme presented according to the following terms, and considering the reflections proposed here as a starting point. The genre of narrative fiction has long been a fertile field for exploring the transformative potential of the human condition, inspiring advances in philosophical reflection and often anticipating breakthroughs in science. In an era marked by rapid technological change and the increasing complexity of the human condition, reflection on the transformation of the status of the subject has become more topical than ever, and has spread to the diverse fields of philosophy, literature and biotechnology. The themes of cloning, genetic duplication and the ‘double’ in science fiction have indeed influenced human perceptions of individual and collective identity, not only within the limits of a purely physical perspective, but also questioning their metaphysical and p...

CfP: Making a Difference: Showing the Positive Impact of Natural History Collections

The Annual Conference & AGM of the Natural Sciences Collections Association will be held on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th May 2025 at The University of Manchester, Manchester Museum. Natural history collections are involved in a huge range of work that has enormous positive impacts on people and the planet – this is a conference to share these stories. The #NatSCA2025 conference invites proposals for presentations looking at impact, how our work is making a difference, how we measure it, how we show success, and how we advocate for collections. We seek ideas from the natural history collections community, educators, collaborators, and beyond. We are interested in practical lessons, unique solutions, new collaborations, and to show what has and hasn’t worked. We are particularly looking for presentations that share the differences museums are making in: facing global challenges such as the biodiversity and climate crises, and environmental issues improving people’s lives changing laws...
