Call for Papers Tobacco Roads Vienna to Kavala: Technology Transfer in the Early Twentieth Century

Call for Papers Tobacco Roads Vienna to Kavala: Technology Transfer in the Early Twentieth Century 5-7 July 2013 Kavala, Greece The workshop marks the centenary anniversary of Kavala’s accession to the Greek state in July 1913. It is supported by the National Technical University of Athens, the Municipality of Kavala, and ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA, Athens. Location: The venue of the conference is a wonderful tobacco warehouse renovated to host the tobacco museum of the city of Kavala in northern Greece. During the early 20th century the economies of a number of Greek cities relied almost exclusively on the cultivation, processing, and sale of tobacco leaves. Especially in coastal cities such as Kavala, a town by the sea in northern Greece, everyday life mirrored the incessant tobacco production cycle—picking, drying, processing and baling tobacco. This was then transported to the port, loaded onto barges lined up at the quays in front of the city’s enormous tobacco

Seeking Panelists for 2014 AHA (deadline February 1)

Greetings: I am seeking additional presenters for a panel I am proposing for the 2014 meeting of the American Historical Association. The panel will interrogate issues of nineteenth-century masculinity and, at this point, I am particularly interested in papers that consider the intersections of masculinity with economic issues and/or violence. I also hope to include at least one paper that takes as its subject non-U.S. masculinities or transnational elements of these problems. Please feel free to contact me with questions, suggestions, and/or paper proposals. I can be reached at < kmbrian@gwmail.gwu.edu >. The core of this reflection will be the complementarities and cross-fertilization that arise in the interaction of technology and democracy, but also the frictions, tensions, and paradoxes that emerge in the discourses, representations and interplay of actors. The assumption that technology poses a threat to the liberal democratic political order rooted in the public debate, has fueled a critical approach to technology in humanities and social sciences. This also fueled various shared Europe-wide initiatives of technology as
