CFP for SHOT 2014 Panel: Revisiting HOT Classics
Hello,
Adelheid Voskuhl and I are putting together a panel, Revisiting HOT Classics, for SHOT's 2014 conference in Dearborn, MI. The goal of the panel is to re-read older works—"classics," however we define that term—in the light of contemporary discussions and interests. Heidi is going to revisit Jeffrey Herf's Reactionary Modernism as an early example of "engineering studies." In my paper, I will argue that John Staudenmaier's Technology's Storytellers is best viewed as a work of political theology, which is based in part on Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises and which puts forth a moral vision of historical writing that lays claims on us regardless of our metaphysical commitments.
We are looking for an additional panelist or two. We are open to different definitions of "classic" and "history of techn ology." Readings of the classic works may be laudatory or critical, as long as they are aimed at engendering new discussions in the present. Junior and senior scholars are equally welcome.
Please drop me a line at leevinsel@gmail.com if you are interested in taking part.
Thanks,
Lee
