Notice of new AHRC Collaborative Doctoral PhD Studentship:

The Motor Industry in Manchester, 1896 to 1939

The Department of History, Politics and Philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University, in partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), Manchester, invites applications from suitably qualified UK/EU candidates for a full-time 3-year Collaborative Doctoral Award, funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, to conduct research on the theme: ‘The rise and fall of the Manchester Motor Industry, 1896–1939’.

This PhD project seeks to understand why Manchester, initially so active in the early motor industry, had ceased almost all involvement by 1939. As the ‘First Modern City’ it enjoyed access to labour, industrial expertise, finance, transport and ready markets, yet its motor industry did not survive. It will draw on MOSI’s collections, notably that of Cockshoots, coachbuilders of Manchester. The project will be co-supervised by Dr Craig Horner and Jan Shearsmith.

The deadline for applications is Monday 1 June 2015. Interviews will take place on Wednesday 17 June in Manchester.
