Call for Applications: 1 post-doc and 1 PhD student, ERC-CoG History of Mediterranean Science
The DEEPMED Project (Discovering the Deep Mediterranean Environment: A History of Science and Strategy, 1860-2020) at the Universidad de Sevilla (Spain), funded by the European Research Commission (Consolidator Grant) is seeking:
1 Post-doc (PD1; full time; 3 years)

- PhD (awarded by the time of
appointment) in history or geography.
·
- Preferably with linguistic
competences relevant to Russia, the Aegean, or the
Adriatic.
1 Doctoral candidate
(PhD1; full time; 4 years)

- Background: history, history of
science and technology, STS, geography, or international relations.
·
- Preference give to candidate
with a Master’s degree.
·
- Preferably with linguistic
competences in Arabic, Turkish and/or Hebrew.
· - S/he will work on a dissertation on 20th century Arabic scientific and strategic visual representations of the deep Mediterranean.
Led by PI
Lino Camprubí, DEEPMED explores the historical discovery of the 3D
Mediterranean in three different but interrelated domains: science and
technology, strategy, and environment. Its main hypothesis is that the
co-evolution of scientific and strategic approaches to the deep Mediterranean
environment transformed conceptions of this sea. Please find more information

Both positions
will join the project’s Work Package 1: The production of space:
charts, currents, and points of passage. It is a historical analysis of
evolving knowledge and visual representations of the Mediterranean depths
through the history of 1. civil and military bathymetry charts (paying special
attention to varying interpretations in the different national and disciplinary
traditions) and 2. understandings of Mediterranean currents and their dynamics
(particularly at the integration of sub-basins and changing understandings of
the water column).
Both
positions are scheduled to start on September 1st, 2022. The final salary is to be
determined later in the selection process.
