2nd Women in Pragmatism International Conference (Naples, 27-28 June 2023)

2nd Women in Pragmatism International Conference. Department of Humanities. University of Naples Federico II . 27 and 28 June 2023

Organiser: Maura Striano

Contact: Maura Striano and Maria Miraglia.

The Women in Pragmatism International Conference will take place at the University of Naples Federico II (Naples, Italy) on 27 and 28 June 2023.

Papers on any areas of pragmatism by women and non-binary people are welcome. In this edition, we aim to support the fight of Iranian women for freedom and of Afghan women (to whom Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO, devoted the International Day of Education 2023-24 January) for access to education. For this reason, one of the panels will be devoted to the topic “Women and Education” with two subtopics: access to education and the hidden curriculum.

However, it will be possible to send contributions in other areas of Pragmatism Studies (see the research areas below).

The conference will be divided into three sections: the first two will consist of a 30-minute presentation (20-minute paper presentation + 10-minute question/discussion) for each panelist. The third one will be dedicated to young scholars and will follow the Scholar Circle model (see information below) where all attendees can share work-in-progress and an interactive mentoring session. In this section, we specifically require that participants present work in progress, on which they are seeking feedback in a collegial and supportive environment.

It is possible to participate in both the 30-minute presentation and the Scholar Circle section.

Scholars Circle

The Scholars Circle is a format launched by the Jane Collective at the SAAP conferences consisting of the discussion of works-in-progress. Participants submit a 300-word abstract of a work in progress. Facilitators will then create “Circles” consisting of 3-4 individuals, grouping the participants with attention to abstract content, scholarly experience, and stage of academic career (e.g. graduate students, tenured professors, instructors, tenure-track instructors, independent scholars, etc.). Participants will then share and receive feedback on their work within their circles, and 20-30 minutes at the end of the session will be used to enable a representative of each group to report key highlights from the discussion to the other groups.
