Call for abstracts: Thematic session “Towards a pedagogical epistemology of science” (SPSP 2026)
A thematic session is being organized for the SPSP 2026 conference on “pedagogical epistemology of science”. Interested contributors are invited to submit a 500-word abstract for a paper to be considered for inclusion in a session of three to four presentations. Two additional slots are still available. Abstracts will be considered until November 24. If necessary, selection will be based on order of submission and fit with the scope of the session, allowing time for coordination before the December 1 deadline.
The session aims to gather contributions that explore what a pedagogical epistemology of science might look like. Papers may address historical or contemporary educational practices and their epistemic significance or examine how training and pedagogy shape scientific knowledge. Contributions from different philosophical traditions and approaches are welcome, including studies that recover overlooked pedagogical epistemologies in the work of philosophers of science or scientists.
The call highlights the continued relevance of Kuhn’s observation that philosophy of science has rarely addressed the problems encountered by students in scientific training. It reviews the limited engagement with pedagogy in both philosophy of science and history of science, the expectations raised by the practice turn, and the ongoing absence of philosophical analyses linking education and research.
Bibliography cited in the original text includes works by Kaiser, Warwick, Kuhn, Matthews, Olesko, Powers, Soler et al., and Wittje.
