Culture Institute PhD Studentship in History of Medicine and Technology University of Leeds and Thackray Medical Museum "The ‘Oxford Knee’: From Local Collaborations to Global Surgical Dominance, 1966-present" Supervisors:  Dr James Stark  and  Professor Graeme Gooday Drawing on extensive archives at the  Thackray Medical Museum  in Leeds, the student will explore and explain how a chance collaboration between medicine and engineering led to a device which dominates global markets. Drawing on oral histories with practitioners and patients, correspondence, medical literature, newspapers and company records, the project will provide the first complete history of the Oxford Knee, helping us to understand how medical innovations become “successful” and the social impact of changing practices in orthopaedics. BSHS Undergraduate Dissertation Archive Grants

The British Society for the History of Science is delighted to announce the 2018 call for applications to the Undergraduate Dissertation Archive Grants. This scheme is open to any undergraduate student that is writing a dissertation on a topic in the history of science, technology and medicine, and is intended to cover costs of travel, or similar associated with archival visits. The individual awards are for up to £250. Grant recipients will be invited to write a short account of their most exciting archival find for the BSHS magazine, Viewpoint. The deadline for applications is 4pm Friday 16th February 2018. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday 23rd February 2018. Institut d'Història de la Medicina i la ciència "López Piñero"  A la fi de març passat, hem rebut dels seus hereus la donació de la biblioteca del metge legista i catedràtic de Medicina Legal de la Universitat de Sevilla, Antonio Lecha-Marzo. La donació consisteix d’una banda, en prop de 200 volums, sobretot, de la seua especialitat i, d’una altra, en materials i documents del seu arxiu. Destaca la correspondència que va rebre de metges i investigadors espanyols, europeus (italians, belgues, portuguesos i francesos, especialment) i llatinoamericans com Juan Vucetich. Hace cuatro años nos embarcamos en este proyecto en el que, gracias a  la tecnología   DIGIBIS   y su programa de gestión bibliotecaria   DIGIBIB , y con el patrocinio de la   Fundación “Tatiana Pérez de Guzmán el Bueno” , nos marcamos el objetivo de difundir los fondos de la Biblioteca y del Archivo de la Real Academia Nacional de Medicina, al que se van agregando día a día más contenidos digitales. En la actualidad, consta de cerca de 1.700 títulos y más de 130.000 objetos multimedia asociados que abarcan, con preferencia, aquellas materias relacionadas de alguna manera con la historia y la práctica de la Medicina, tanto impresos como manuscritos.
