field of history of theoretical physics.


The History and Philosophy of Science Unit at the University of Geneva,
  Switzerland, is opening a Ph.D. student position related to a Swiss
national project devoted to actors and institutional and social
mechanisms in the emergence of new disciplinary fields.

The candidate is expected to collect and analyse data and documents
pertaining to the emergence of theoretical physics in the Academic
centers of the French part of Switzerland (Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel,
Fribourg, etc.). His (her) Ph.D thesis will be devoted to specific
aspects of this research.

Funding period: This is a three years position starting with January
1st, 2010, with a gross annual salary of 39000 CHF, an amount sufficient
to make a living in Geneva. European candidates may consider living in
neighbouring France.

Requirements: The successful candidate shall have a good
knowledge of physics, and an acquaintance with the methods and issues of
history and sociology of science. Good French speaking and writing
skills are mandatory. A fair knowledge of German will be an advantage.
