The Scientific Electronic Library Online - SciELO is an electronic virtual library covering a collection of Spanish scientific journals selected following preestablished quality criteria.
The library is an integral part of a project being developed by FAPESP - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, in partnership with BIREME - the Latin American andCaribbean Center Spain
The main aim of SciELO is to develop a common methodology for the preparation, storage, dissemination and evaluation of Spanish scientific literature in electronic format.
As the project develops, new journal titles will be added in the library collection.

The objective of the site is to implement an electronic virtual library, providing full access to a collection of serial titles, a collection of issues from individual serial titles, as well as to the full text of articles. The access to both serial titles and articles is available via indexes and search forms.
SciELO site is an integral part of the FAPESP-BIREME Project and it is an application of the methodology being developed by the project, particularly the Internet Interface module.
The site will be constantly updated both in form and content, according to the project's advancements.
SciELO interface provides access to its serials collection via an alphabetic list of titles or a subject index or a search by word of serial titles, publisher names, city of publication and subject.
The interface also provides access to the full text of articles via author index or subject index or a search form on article elements such as author names, words from title, subject and words from the full text.
Apart from serials and articles modules, SciELO interface provides access to bibliometric information. It's been developed a beta version that includes information about site usage and journal citation.

El proyecto SciELO es el resultado de la cooperación entre BIREME (Centro Latinoamericano y del Caribe de información en Ciencias de la Salud) FAPESP - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, y está siendo desarrollado en España por la Biblioteca Nacional de Ciencias de la Salud, gracias al acuerdo de colaboración establecido en la OPS/OMS y el Instituto de Salud Carlos III
El principal objetivo es contribuir al desarrollo de la investigación, aumentando la difusión de la producción científica nacional y mejorando y ampliando los medios de publicación y evaluación de sus resultados.
El sitio de SciELO es una parte del Proyecto FAPESP/BIREME y es una aplicación de la metodología que el proyecto está desarrollando, en particular, el módulo de Interfase en Internet.
El sitio se actualizará tanto en forma como en contenido, en la medida en que el proyecto avance.
La interfaz también proporciona acceso al texto completo de los artículos por medio de un índice de autores, un índice de materias o un formulario de búsqueda por nombre de autores, palabras del título, materias o búsqueda libre en el texto completo.
Además del módulo de revistas y del módulo de artículos, se ha implantado en modo de pruebas un módulo de estadísticas, con acceso a datos de uso del sitio y cálculos bibliométricos.
